Democracy From Scratch

I want to consider this post if not a special one, at least a different one. I would like to talk about a very interesting initiative taking place on the web. What would you say if all mankind, as one, could live in a democracy, where everyone can express freely their opinion and make decisions regarding problems of the entire world? I know it sounds BIG, and I think it really is but BIG achievements are born out of BIG initiatives. Such an initiative was brought to my attention by a friend of mine who currently lives in Shangai. The beautiful part about this project is that if the members want it, it doesn’t have to be a democracy at all. The reason it started as a democracy is probably because this is, apparently, the best political system on Earth. But even so it still has its share of problems just like any other political system. But on this website the direction of the project is set by the members through discussion and voting mechanisms. Trying to achieve world democracy is not an easy task. First of all the whole world must be represented. That’s why the first goal of this group is to gather at least one member from each country in the world. Apparently there are somewhere between 193 and 195 countries in the world. We aim for 195. So far the number of countries represented is somewhere around ten. This idea is as fresh as it gets, and it is most likely that nobody has attempted this before. The success or failure of the whole project lies in the hands of its members who need to be active, not just to be satisfied with staying aside and waiting for others to take decisions in its place. If you are worried that your English is not good enough, than maybe this is a chance to practice or to improve it. With such a geographical diversity it is likely for language misinterpretations to appear but that shouldn’t be a problem whatsoever. I think the experience of discovering different points of view from all over the world is something to appreciate and maybe it could become a learning experience.
